The Penn State Cancer Institute and the Department of Medicine are seeking candidates for the inaugural Chief of the Division of Blood and Vascular Disorders.
The Chief will lead a division that currently consists of 6 faculty members with significant plans for growth in programs related to inherited disorders of hemostasis, thrombosis and sickle cell disease. The successful candidate will have an MD (+/- PhD degree), subspecialty board certification in Hematology, and leadership experience in an academic setting. Bringing a record of extramural support in research as a physician/scientist, they will qualify for the rank of Full Professor in the tenure track in the Penn State University College of Medicine. In addition, they will possess outstanding clinical, teaching and communication skills, with a commitment to excellence, diversity and mentorship. Strong knowledge of and competence in the area of hemostasis and thrombosis is required. An exceptional support package will include an appointment to a named Hematology professorship. The Chief of the Division of Blood and Vascular Disorders will have access to 340B Program income from the HRSA grant to the Hemophilia Treatment Center. The Chief will report to the Director of the Penn State Cancer Institute and partner closely with the Chair of the Department of Medicine. Programs that focus on bleeding and clotting disorders and Sickle Cell Disease will be prioritized. The Chief oversees the Division’s teaching, research and clinical activities, and as such will have hiring authority and will manage the Division’s financial resources. Division Chiefs are given considerable autonomy to advance an overarching strategy for their division.
Desired Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate will bring the following skills, qualities and experience which are considered critical to success:
- Board certification in Hematology
- An MD or MD/PhD with a record of achievement suitable for appointment at the level of full Professor
- A physician scientist with demonstrated success in obtaining extramural funding.
- Progressive administrative and operational experience in an academic medical center setting
- A track record of partnering with a breadth of stakeholders to develop, inspire, communicate and operationalize a shared vision and strategic plan
- Ability to develop a strong leadership team and to delegate authority to streamline policies, processes and procedures within a complex, evolving and dynamic environment
- Commitment to diversity and inclusion as lived values and evidence building cultures that ensure equity
- Understanding of and enthusiasm for the tripartite mission of the College of Medicine, along with knowledge of the culture of academic medical institutions
- Understanding of the value of medical education and of the recent and emerging trends in undergraduate and graduate medical education, including hematology fellowship programs
- Strong ability to collaborate and build trust with a diverse group of stakeholders within large and complex organizations
- Success leading or supporting faculty recruitment, retention and development efforts that enhance academic excellence, diversity, equity and inclusion
- Strong acumen and judgment in managing financial resources and the ability to develop and implement budgets effectively, aligning resources with strategic priorities.
- It is imperative that the chief develop a strong collaborative relationship with stakeholders in the Cancer Institute and across the Department of Medicine to insure the best care for all patients with inheritable and acquired non-malignant blood and vascular disorders, and the best training for residents in Medicine and fellows in Hematology. The chief must work synergistically with the Division of Hematology/Oncology to realize this vision.
