LionCare Clinics

General Clinic

The General Health Clinic provides students and faculty of Penn State College of Medicine an opportunity to see patients from Bethesda Mission, local shelters, and the wider community. Students gather complete histories and physical examination for each patient, and then work together with a physician to identify and develop a plan of care for the patient.

Women's Clinic

Since its founding in 2002, LionCare has provided care for underserved women in the Harrisburg area via its Women's Health Clinic. In addition to offering comprehensive physicals and meeting the acute care needs of the women, the clinic provides PAP smears, STI screening, pregnancy testing, HIV testing and counseling, rectal and pelvic exams, flu shots, breast exams, and educational information about issues related to women's health and parenting, all free of charge.

Cardiology/Pulmonology Clinic

The Cardiology/Pulmonology clinic's aim is to provide specialty care to the underserved community in the Harrisburg area. The clinic takes place on the last Thursday of every month and is attended by experienced physicians from Penn State Hershey Medical Center, assisted by medical students as well as physician assistant students from Penn State College of Medicine.

Orthopedic Clinic

LionCare and Hershey Medical Center Orthopedics teamed up to operate a monthly Joint Management Clinic to help patients with musculoskeletal complaints. Patients are seen by students as well as Dr. Rob Gallo, an orthopedic surgeon. John Wawrzyniak, Scott Dehil and Bob Kelly of Physical Therapy are also present and provide patients with strengthening exercises and help minimize pain. We also provide steroid injections to those who qualify.

Psychiatry Clinic

The Psychiatry Clinic offers psychiatric evaluations and psychopharmacology only for the residents of the Bethesda Mission experiencing psychiatric concerns. On the first Thursday of every month, two Penn State Hershey psychiatrists - assisted by four medical students - work with four patients new to the clinic and four patients in the clinic for follow-up care. A primary goal of this clinic is to provide interim psychiatric care to people waiting for scheduled care in other settings.

Neurology Clinic

The LionCare Neurology Clinic provides complete neurological exams primarily to residents of the Bethesda Mission experiencing neurological issues, and provides follow up care. Patients benefit from the skillful care and attention of Penn State Hershey Neurologists. Students gain experience performing a comprehensive neurological examination.

Internal Medicine Residents' Clinic

The Internal Medicine Resident's Clinic is staffed every Tuesday evening by Penn State Hershey Internal Medicine residents as part of their required training, as well as volunteer faculty from the Departments of Medicine, Pediatrics and Dermatology, and third-year Medicine clerkship students. On average, 25 patients are seen at each session. 

Dermatology Clinic

The Penn State Hershey Medical Center Dermatology department holds a clinic at LionCare on the first Tuesday of every month. They offer skin cancer screenings and skin exams.

Ophthalmology Clinic

Each Fall, Ophthalmology Interest Group and Ophthalmology Department of Penn State Hershey co-sponsor a free annual eye clinic and vision screening for the medically underserved from Bethesda Mission and other surrounding shelters at the LionCare clinic. Patients are seen by faculty, residents, and students, who have the opportunity to hone their eye examination skills and interact with patients.

About 50% of those seen are in need of glasses or have undiagnosed/untreated eye disease including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, or cataracts. Approximately 30-40 of the patients examined are provided with corrective lenses during the course of this screening day.

Patient Navigation Program

​LionCare is excited to announce a new care-coordination program to complement our medical services. Starting September 2015, Lion Care will offer on-site student care coordinators to any patients interested. Our services include guidance on assistance for housing, heating, food, and transportation needs. We are currently resourcing help from the local Harrisburg area and welcome any new partnerships available.
