About Me
I am a board-certified pediatric hematologist/oncologist who serves as chief of Penn State Health Children’s Hospital’s Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology. In addition, I am the director of pediatric oncology research and a professor of pediatrics and pharmacology at Penn State College of Medicine.
As founder and chair of the Beat Childhood Cancer Research Consortium, I lead a group of more than 55 hospitals that offer a worldwide network of childhood cancer clinical trials. Preclinical research conducted within my laboratory has led to the opening of more than 20 clinical trials with a focus on cancer stem cells and targeted therapies for children with cancer. I have led the research studying both Clinical Precision Medicine approaches to cancer and eflornithine (DFMO) for children with neuroblastoma to keep children in remission. This work has led to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approving DFMO for high-risk neuroblastoma.
Earlier in my career, I was director of the Isabella Santos Foundation Solid and Rare Tumor Program and professor of pediatric oncology at Levine Children’s Hospital Atrium Health in Charlotte, North Carolina. I also developed and served as director of the Innovative Therapeutics Clinic at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
