Innovative Sleep Therapy

Penn State Health offers Inspire therapy, an innovative obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) treatment option. Inspire may be a good choice for people who cannot use or get consistent benefit from continuous positive airway pressure devices, called CPAPs, which involve wearing masks.

Inspire is a small device placed during a same-day, outpatient procedure. It works inside your body with your natural breathing process to treat sleep apnea.

How does Inspire therapy work?

The Inspire device is implanted near your collarbone, where it continuously monitors your breathing while you sleep. Based on your unique breathing patterns, the system delivers gentle stimulation to airway muscles and keeps them open when you’re sleeping.

Inspire therapy is controlled by a small, handheld sleep remote. Simply turn on the therapy at night before bed and off in the morning when you wake.

What are the benefits of Inspire?

A clinical trial had high patient success rates, including:

  • 81% of patients successfully used Inspire therapy all night, every night.
  • 78% reported a reduction in sleep apnea events per hour.
  • 75% saw a reduction in bed partner-reported snoring.

Will Inspire work for me?

You may be a candidate for Inspire if you:

  • Have moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea
  • Are unable to use or get consistent benefit from a CPAP
  • Are not significantly obese
  • Are over the age of 22

If you haven’t tried CPAP therapy or do not meet the qualifications for Inspire therapy, schedule an appointment with a sleep medicine specialist today.
