The Penn State Health Approach to Smoking Cessation
The Penn State Health Smoking Cessation Program is a tobacco treatment program that involves one-on-one, 30-minute sessions to assess your nicotine dependence. We will discuss your smoking routine, review strategies and evaluate your coping skills. Then, we’ll develop a tailored plan that’s specific to your lifestyle and the lifestyle modifications that will help you quit. Our team is also able to prescribe medications to assist in controlling nicotine cravings. There will be a minimum of two sessions and then follow-up personalized to your individual needs.
Anyone who is currently smoking and has a desire to quit is eligible for this program.
It is located on the first floor of Penn State Cancer Institute, 400 University Drive, in Hershey, PA, next to the main entrance of Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.
How Will Quitting Smoking Help Me?
When you quit smoking, you can:
- Improve your breathing and other lung conditions, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema
- Decrease your risk of getting cancer, including lung cancer
- Lower your blood pressure, cholesterol and risk of having a heart attack
- Improve proper wound healing, especially after surgery
- Plus many more benefits for your entire body
Are These Appointments Covered By My Insurance?
Most insurance companies cover two quit attempts per year. Each quit attempt includes four counseling sessions.
You can be referred by your doctor; however, our clinic is open to anyone. Self-referrals are welcome. Our staff will communicate with your primary care physician.
Breathe Healthy, Live Happy
In addition to the Smoking Cessation Program, we offer free group sessions with others who are also trying to quit. These group classes were developed by the American Lung Association and provide the resources and support to further develop your personalized quit plan. This program can also provide free nicotine replacement therapy for one month.
Group classes are held quarterly on the Hershey campus at the University Fitness Center, 30 Conference Drive, Hershey, PA.
To register for the free group sessions, call 717-232-2027 or email [email protected].
