Supporting every beat
Meet Kenny Baranowski, an 8-year-old “Superman” who was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Find out how the Congenital Heart Center at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, which provides comprehensive care all in one location, has helped him and his parents overcome every hurdle on his journey.
Lifelong care for congenital heart disease
Penn State Health Congenital Heart Center at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center provides comprehensive care for patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) throughout life, from womb to adulthood, all in one location.
Our staff is an integrated team of specialists and subspecialists, with a nationally recognized reputation for pediatric congenital heart care, congenital heart surgery and adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) care through our Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program. As a Comprehensive Care Center accredited by the Adult Congenital Heart Association, we provide the highest level of care that meets national standards.
A unique center for unique needs
Infants with CHD become adults with CHD, so Penn State Health developed a program to provide seamless, coordinated care, beginning before birth, at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital and continuing through adulthood in the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program. Convenient outreach clinics stretch from Altoona to eastern Berks County, all coordinated by the Penn State Health Congenital Heart Center.
Penn State Health Congenital Heart Center includes:
- Pediatric Cardiology
- Congenital Heart Surgery
- Transition of Care Program, where children with CHD seamlessly grow into adult care
- Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program
- Cardio-Obstetrics Program, for women with CHD and other cardiac issues that can arise during pregnancy
- Penn State Heart and Vascular Institute
Congenital heart disease research and clinical trials
Our pediatric and adult CHD cardiologists collaborate on congenital heart disease research and clinical trials. These studies frequently seek volunteers to participate, helping our scientists improve diagnostic techniques and develop better treatments.
